Overview
Urinetown is a side splitting sendup of greed, love, revolution (and musicals!), in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
Research
Other posters for this production did a great job at capturing a gothic rebellious theme. I knew I wanted something featuring a great number of figures.
I experimented with some messy hand lettering to reflect the plays playful nature
Design Elements
The early concept was a good use of the figures but the text felt very stiff and out of place. The grey on yellow was like a flashbang with how prominent the yellow was.
In the final I decided to add some warmth to the yellow and use it as an attention grabber rather that having it take up the entire poster. Introducing a hand lettered title pushed away from the stuffiness of the original concept, allowing the playful element of this musical to shine through.
Formats
In order to get the most out of each design, I compiled different layouts to fit for bot digital and print purposes. This allowed for arcadia to advertise this design on several platforms
